The remarkable QuadRetro Chronograph and WHY some people buy it
By: bernard cheong (registered) Thursday, May 8th, 2008 - Photo Nav: View All 1 photo(s)This was and remains today a remarkable watch from my over exposed and often over loaded choices of chronographs.
From the first days of my Speedmaster, to the first Lange Datograph, the coming of the DeBethune Maxichrono is something to wait for.
I reflect that until TODAY..even with many funky watches and edgy designs..I still don't have enough wealth to buy with out "resale" value...I simply don't have THAT much money.
If I did...and I should hope to be so..I would really want to look at THIS watch!
But for what it is worth....I was fortunate to bump into one man who DID get a Genta Quadretrograph. And later..another.
NOTE: the GG Quadretrograph here is the SAME price as a Datograph (with date) 2008 prices.
So why do some of the wealthiest men, in this case, this watch is incredibly masculine to the M degree...buy the Genta Chronograph? Well..I met one owner:
And learnt from others too...
(1) He has already the Datograph in 1999 or so..and has now retired it to his son.
(2) His employees (lawyers) wear langes and Pateks
(3) He gives away Pateks as business lubricants, and sometimes Rolexs..so he hates wearing these things as he does not want to be seen as the recipient.
(4) Pateks bore him..he has had one too many, but if they do make somehting interesting..well OK.
(5) He has a chestful of Pateks and three Patek big complications..most were gifts.
(6) He has a chestful of Pateks, most bought by himself..aged then 30 to 50.
(7) He still respects Patek and Lange..but today..he need not buy watches with "resale" factor anymore...thank God.
(8) He has interest in the DeBethune Maxichrono, and from there..the GG Quad Retro (seen here) caught his full attention.
(9) He has among his watches that he wears..GF number 1, MBF no1, Opus 6, (RM was a short affair) and after those..he can't "go back" to Pateks and Langes.
(10) He likes to LOOK at a watch and SEE the ART ...instantly...and with minimal reflective thought...forget about using a loupe!
(11) He hates to talk of residual and resales..the watch makes great gifts!
(12) It has to look good with his collection of cars...and his yacht...err and the 'plane.
Sigh...the green grass of the others!!!
