The first night race in the world, F1 is to open in sept 2008. note the white visors, not black/tinted. These are the 50 pieces to be issued on that day! Collectable for sure. Numbered as 1/50, NO other numbers at all. 1 of 50!!! Now, the quality of the dials are quite exceptional. The white carbon fibre. Note the on going sailor version is more complex... The old Mickey dials are no match in terms of mult...

Gefica: The Review

At first, I didn't want a Gefica.Sure, it was an immediately appealing design experiment based on a fascinating back-story - who can resist the Hemingwayesque overtones of big-game hunting in Africa, with a bronze-age tribal artefact on your wrist...especially one fitted out with space-age materials (titanium), haute-de-gamme innards (a very refined Girard-Perregaux base movement overlaid with GG's impeccable and highly complex bi-retrograde addenda), and the alpha-male swagger of a 45.5mm diamete...

Shanghai Gerald Genta Boutique Launch: 2-Part Report

Some time back I reported on the "soft" opening of the new Gérald Genta boutique at Shanghai's upscale Plaza 66 shopping centre.   credit: zOrg at skyscrapercity.com If ever there were an HH watch company reaching out to embrace the full potential of China as an emerging luxury market of signal importance, it would have to be GG. Shanghai is Genta's third boutique, and the first to open outside Europe. (The other two, in Geneva and Paris, were only launched late last year.) Chief Execu...

The Largest Party in Shanghai!!! Gerald Genta opens a boutique at Plaza 66

When Genta opened its doors next to a row of the most impressive brands in an entire floor devoted ONLY to watch boutiques in Shanghai. It was a huge blast like some movie opening day. For one..Shanghai is full of celebrity stars and starlets from the chinese movie industry..and everyone was there. Forget about normal people..the paparazzi was out in full force. The event was totally A list..crowded..wild..provocative..and cool. Watches were actually sold ..on the spot..I witnessed that the MOST activ...

Poor Man's Patina, or how to Get a Gefica

I want one of those fantastic bronze watches, but I can't find a dealer within a thousand miles. And there aren't too many around - guess they all are going to our pals in Singapore. So on an off-chance that someone might have tired of his already, I hit the auction sites and other watch dealers. No luck, until I stumbled across a watch up in the Rocky Mountains. It was an old watch, but it did claim to be a bronze Gerald Genta Gefica Safari. In perfect (auction) condition. After an agonizing 10 days of ne...

The remarkable QuadRetro Chronograph and WHY some people buy it

This was and remains today a remarkable watch from my over exposed and often over loaded choices of chronographs. From the first days of my Speedmaster, to the first Lange Datograph,  the coming of the DeBethune Maxichrono is something to wait for. I reflect that until TODAY..even with many funky watches and edgy designs..I still don't have enough wealth to buy with out "resale" value...I simply don't have THAT much money.  If I did...and I should hope to be so..I would really want to look at T...

A visit at the Genta Shop in Paris

Yesterday, I had the big pleasure to visit the Genta Shop in Paris. I was perfectly welcomed by Caroline and Laure, as always ! I took the opportunity to shoot several Arena watches. Here is the Arena Tourbillon QP Moonphases : The Tourbillon is not visible due to the fact that the dial is already very busy ! Very busy but very clear. My only regret is that the date system should have been easier. The platinum case has a 41mm diameter and a palladium bezel. The finishings are gre...

A Visit to the Gérald Genta Shanghai Boutique

A couple of months ago I posted on ThePuristS my report on JLC's "The Manufacture Comes to You" exhibition in Shanghai, folding into it a look at the new JLC Boutique, located in the Basement Concourse of ultra-upmarket Plaza 66 shopping centre on Nanjing West Road.Well of course, JLC aren't the only game in town. In fact there are now at least a dozen single-brand watch boutiques nestled together along this fabulous concourse, which opened in early January this year. Several of my favourite brands are rep...

A visit to Daniel Roth and Gérald Genta in Le Sentier(c)12.2007,  Donald W. Corson   Daniel Roth and Gérald Genta are young brands, high end brands and brands that revel in complications.  To support their growth inside the Bulgari Group they have just completed the construction of a new modern factory building directly adjacent to their previous building which hails from 1905 (granite stairs, wrought iron railings, solid oak doors, built to last forever).  With the new...

Genta's breaks with colors and materials .. tantalum, gold, grey..

I saw both Gefica and the new biretro simultaneuosly at Le Sentier in winter of 2006. I was struck by the break away from all tradition, dna, thematic trade marks etc by both teams. Yes, there was the fact that it had to have the typical architecture that was contrained by the movements workings, and that basically, the thing was a "watch". But that's it. The teams had used color and metal, they brought "fusion", to an extreme, were and had every right to be confident that they would sell everything th...

The prelude to Genta's Upcoming Super watch in 2008

Superwatches   That a Gerald Genta will be among the super watches in 2008 is beyond doubt! But first, a tribute to all the ones that came before it…   Click to view full size image   Why should superwatches even exist? Are these mere extravagant playthings for the ultra wealthy? Can we even think of watchmaking as an art? Is there value beyond the terms of dollars and cents in these works?     Deciding on a list took me on a journey to Paris and a day of contem...

Gefica as it ages...4 months old.

have kept it unworn for a month. Placed on my desk, after wearing it almost daily for several months. It has a matt appearance, very "wood" like in nature, as if the case was carved from a heavy, solid piece of teakwood. Very unusual, it does not even look like metal, a very very pleasing and strangely "zen" like quality of serenity about it.Now, when the first pieces arrive in Singapore for Tempus, we MUST compare them! ...

Gerald Roden's reply to International Herald Tribune's questions on the Gefica. (extract)

Reasons behind design? To convey a very bold and mechanical look - no superluminova, only bold carved-in materials. It is a watch from another time, between the 1920's African/Art Deco period and the futuristic "Predator" Steam Punk era. Giger..Swiss...Computer era...vs tribal drums... The design is a mixture of Art Deco and African Art (which was an influence on Art Deco). These inspirations came from the idea of allowing a revival of the "hunter's watch" represented by the first Gefica - by reconsidering ...
